Establishing a good dental routine for your child does not take long. It will take approximately 7 days to establish a good habit and about 15 minutes a day. By taking the time and teaching your child the importance of good brushing routines early will prevent early cavities and tooth decay. Children love consistency and by adding your brushing habit into your daily routine will make it easier to establish in your child. If your child knows it is expected and needs to be done they will do it. That is a benefit that will make you, your child and your dentist happy.

1. Morning Brushes: Every morning, wake up with your children and visit the bathroom sink to wash up and brush teeth. Show your kids how to put the toothpaste on the brush and how to actually brush their teeth. Every child should spend about two to three minutes brushing their teeth. This shows your child that the first thing he or she must do in the morning and it will become a life long habit.

2. Flossing: Flossing is not always the favorite part of brushing but it is just as important as brushing. If your child does not like brushing you can try turning flossing into a game. For example, whoever finishes flossing first is the winner. Flossing is not always remembered but should be done twice a day.

3. Night Time Brushing: Be sure to add brushing time into your child’s nightime routine. It is good to have a set routine that your child knows and expects to end each night. To treat your child end the night with a bedtime story after brushing and flossing for the day..

The earlier they get in the habit, the more persistent they will be. Healthy teeth means easier dentist visits and a great start to have healthy teeth through adulthood.

Getting your kids to brush can be a chore in itself. My kids usually complained about something when it came time to brush. Some days it was the taste of the toothpaste while other days it was the color of the toothbrush. The task of getting them to brush was not fun. I am sure most parents have experienced this at one time or another.

Good dental care is important. Healthy teeth means less traumatic experiences at the dentist. There is nothing worse than watching your child cry and wrestle with the dentist in order to fill one of those pesky cavities. Establishing good brush habits while your child is young will follow your child through his teenage years and into adulthood. I guess you can think of your child’s baby teeth as their practice teeth to get them ready to care for their permanent adult teeth.

While buying the newest favorite superhero themed toothbrush, or glittery toothpaste will make your child excited to brush for a short time, the novelty will soon wear off. The goal is to get your child to stay interested in brushing.

While most parents try the obvious incentives to brush such as special toothbrushes and tooth paste or even brush charts or stickers, the least obvious choice may be even more successful. What is this secret ammunition for parents? The Tooth Fairy is a great motivator to get your young child to keep brushing. Instead of waiting for your child to lose their first tooth to have a visit from the Tooth Fairy try sending a reminder to brush note. By placing little reminder notes from the Tooth Fairy to your child encouraging them to brush will help give your child motivated. If they think the Tooth Fairy is watching them and waiting anxiously for their cared for shiny and white baby teeth to fall out they will be more excited to keep brushing.

Enjoy the magical time when your children believe in the Tooth Fairy. Enjoy the twinkle in their eye and the smile across their face. Take advantage of this awesome opportunity to help your child understand the importance of good dental care.

Find out how easy it is to create personalized Tooth Fairy Lettersand encourage your child to brush. Visit and get a free printable Tooth Fairy Letter today.
