It’s a special time in every couple’s life when their baby takes their first bite of solid food. Experts agree that the best time to introduce your baby to solid food should be between four to six months old. When you do begin giving your child solid food it should be as a supplement to baby food or breast milk.

One indicator that your baby may be ready for solid foods is if he or she can sit upright. Other signs are if your child can hold their head up and shows interest in what others are eating.

It’s important to start the solid food process with meals that are considered “stage one” foods. These include such things as pureed fruits and vegetables. Try giving your baby one fruit and vegetable at a time. Don’t combine flavors right away.

Most parents have luck with introducing their baby’s to solid food with apples, pears, carrots, bananas and squash. All you have to do is buy a food processor or blender and puree them. It’s quick and easy.

When you’re first starting to make the transition to solid food, try giving it to them as a treat. Just put some on your finger or a soft spoon and let them suck it off.

Your baby may or may not be eager to try the food. If he or she doesn’t seem interested don’t force it. They will eat solid food when they are ready.

If your child is receptive to solid foods limit them to only one or two spoonfuls. Let them get a taste of the food but continue to use breast milk or formula as their main source of nutrition. Gradually increase the amount of solid food they ingest and phase out the breast milk and/or formula.

There’s no rush. Start slowly and read your baby’s signals. They will let you know when they are ready to take the big step of eating solid foods.
