Beginning a child on the right path to healthy eating habits is imperative in our world of fast food and processed food. The beginning habits of a child’s life will endure throughout his or her adolescence. This means that beginning the right choices start with the babies first weeks and years. Parents are in charge of the well being of their children. This means that it’s your responsibility to get lots of vitamins and nutrients into your child’s body. You need to understand what the child should be eating and how it should be prepared, both for taste and nutritional content. You also should lead by example and make positive changes in your own diet to further enhance the diet of your entire family. Finally, you should experiment and try different things together as a family. By participating in the betterment of diet for your whole family, your baby or toddler will understand the importance of healthy eating as he or she grows.
Beginning good eating habits begins with your pregnancy. Proper consumption of carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins leads to an uncomplicated birth, a healthy mother, and a healthy baby. You should continue your great eating trends into the breast feeding part of your infant’s life. You are passing your nutrients directly to your child, so it is essential that you have plenty of nutrients. Mother to be and new mothers should eat lots of fresh, raw vegetables and fruits. You should try to eat different colors of the rainbow when it comes to produce, and limit sodium and Trans fat intake. It is best to eliminate Trans fat and caffeine altogether. As your child begins eating foods, make sure that it is organic, pure, and free of chemical add in’s or fillers.
Toddlers should also be eating a variety of fruits and vegetables. As large amounts of fruits and vegetables contain lots of water that fill their stomachs, it is important that you balance this with protein and whole grain, complex carbohydrates. Children also need lots of calcium to stay healthy. Children are growing critically until they are 18 or older, so each day has to be filled with the right foods. More whole food and less processed and sweetened foods should be consumed. Sugar should never be added to drinks and rarely added to foods. Choose natural sweeteners that are less processed or stick to juice. Make sure that they are outside so that they can absorb calcium with the vitamin D they are getting from the sun.
Making sure that your child is open minded to new foods will guarantee that he or she will continue to explore new foods that contain different nutrients. If a child does not like something, it is imperative that you do not force the issue. Try that same food prepared differently at a later date to see if you cannot show your child that the particular food item in question can be good. You can “sneak” in fruits and vegetables that your child cannot taste into baked goods, soups, and other creative ideas. Use your imagination to create kid friendly foods that are low in sodium and sugar. You can find a great balance if you put forth some effort.
If you are trying to constantly improve the quality and nutrient amounts of the food your child is eating, then you should remember to not overdo it. You do not want your child to see food as a source of fuel only. Make eating enjoyable and do it with the family. In this way, you can improve the quality of your child’s lifetime eating habits.
